If you are anything like me, you are always looking for ways to shorten your morning routine. The goal is to get more sleep or to have more time to get ready. Nothing starts my day off worse than when I am running late or forgot something for work. It always seems to be a snowball effect from that point on, dooming my day. And it isn’t even 7am yet!
Over the years I have perfected my morning routine. For the most part! The below steps are what I do and will be easy for you to implement.
1. Check Your Planner or Schedule the Night Before
This is also a good tip that I discuss on how to revolutionize your work day and make yourself more productive (read more here!) You must check your planner the evening before. What you have on your schedule for the following day can affect so many things in your morning routine.
Do you have a special event that you need to bring baked goods for?
Do you have an appointment that you need to go to before work?
Are you planning to hit the gym up after work? Or maybe happy hour?
Knowing what your plans are for the following day can allow you to assemble what you need the night before. You can make sure that you have your baked goods made. Or that you make yourself a sticky note to put on your bathroom mirror to remind you not to drive to work but instead to your appointment. You can have that gym bag packed with your workout clothes and sitting in your car already.
Being prepared for the next day allows you to avoid any surprises that can make you late.
2. Pick Your Outfit the Night Before
Okay, I realize that this is something that you might do for your six year old but hear me out! I will pick my clothes out the night before and have them hanging on a towel rack that isn’t used in our bathroom. If I were to try and pick this outfit the morning of, it would take me at least five minutes before I decided if I was willing to wear that outfit today or not.
Having it picked out and ready to go takes out the guessing game for me. This seriously has shaved at least five minutes off of my morning routine.
When I say pick out your clothes I mean literally everything that you plan on wearing the next day. That includes jewelry, socks, under garments, etc…
3. Pack Your Lunch the Night Before
You may start to sense a theme here. Being prepared and taking 10 minutes the night before to get everything ready saves you so much time in the morning!
I take my lunch to work about 90% of the time. Every night I make sure that my lunch bag and coffee mug are next to my Keurig. I pack up whatever leftovers, salad, fruit, snacks, etc. that I plan on taking and keep them all in one spot in the fridge or on the counter if they don’t need to be refrigerated. Again I realize that this routine sounds like it is made for a young child but doing these steps save me time and I don’t know what is childish about saving time!
4. Do Something that Makes You Happy
This is easily my favorite part of my mornings 🙂
I have three things that I do every morning that fall into this category. What you do will be up to you based on your likes and how much time that you have. Being in a good mood when I leave the house really sets the tone for the rest of the day. Who doesn’t want to have an awesome day start with an organized morning routine and topping it off with something that makes you smile!?
My three things are a hot beverage, time to play & cuddle with my dog, and listening to my favorite radio talk show. The hot beverage only requires the time that it takes for me to turn on and load my Keurig. I will then sip my tea or coffee on my drive to work.
Bonus Tip: It is much harder to get upset and shake your fist at a bad driver when you have a drink in your hand 🙂
The second thing that I do is play with my dog for 10 minutes after she has gone outside and ate her breakfast. I turn on the news in the living room and we cuddle or play catch, depending on her mood that morning. If you have ever cuddled a sleepy dog then you will know that it is impossible not to be happy while that is going on. Just keeping the good vibes going here!
While I am sipping my hot beverage on my drive to work, I listen to my favorite morning show. (Shout out to the Big Party Morning show on 94.1FM). Always love that I get to start out my morning with a laugh. Or two!
Doing something that makes you happy doesn’t have to take a lot of your time, but it has a tremendous effect on your mood for the rest of the day.
5. Review, Adjust & Repeat
Take a look at what you are currently doing as part of your morning routine. Is there something that could easily be done the night before? Are you doing something that doesn’t need to be done at all?
Review your routine and adjust it accordingly. Keep doing this until you have a routine that works for you!
Does anyone have any routine additions that they cannot live without? I would love to hear about them in the comments!
